Boater Skills.ca Adds More Instructors

Craig Hamilton of BoaterSkills.ca adds new instructorsIn order to meet the rising demand in Ontario for boat-handling clinics, BoaterSkills.ca announced the addition of two instructors to assist in training boaters on waters to the north and east of the GTA.

Bob Minielly and Joe Farish, both retired Sergeants from the Marine Division of the Ontario Provincial Police, are now onboard to assist with teaching half day and full day boat-handling clinics across Ontario.

“In 2012 we saw a tripling of the number of clinic requests from boaters across the GTA and Cottage Country who wanted help with docking, close quarters maneuvering or in obtaining an operator card, VHF radio or Toronto Harbour License.” stated RYA Yachtmaster and Master Instructor Craig Hamilton, who founded Boaterskills.ca in 2011.

Already, Boaterskills.ca say that they have seen an increase over this time last year in bookings for boat-handling clinics and certification courses.

“We are pulling together an exceptional staff of instructors with years of on-water teaching and management experience with the O.P.P. to help build and implement our Recreational Boater Training Program in Canada. It’s a very exciting time for us.” said Hamilton.

With more than 2.5 million boaters in Ontario preparing to head out on the water this year, many will be looking for help at the helm. Boaters new to boating or wanting a 'refresh' who have taken either the half day or full day boat-handling clinics are better prepared and more competent than ever before.

Located in Port Credit Harbour Marina, BoaterSkills.ca offers half and full day on-the-water boat handling instruction courses and well as onshore boating courses. They are recognized by major insurance brokers in Ontario (including Skippers' Plan Insurance).

For further information on private or group boat-handling clinics and boater certification courses, visit www.boaterskills.ca or call 905-484-BOAT (2628).

Tips on Selling Your Boat...Getting a marine survey

Carver 530 at the Port Credit Boat ShowIf you've ever sold a home before, you know how important it is to put your best foot forward. We all talk about 'getting our house' ready for market and the same holds true for your boat. If you are getting ready to sell your boat, now is the time to invest in taking care of those little annoyances.

Things like a generator that won't start, or lights that won't work can be perceived as major issues to a potential buyer and beg the question what else could be wrong with the vessel. It could also lead a buyer to intentionally drive the price of the boat down because of all of the 'repairs' that are required.

Having a marine survey completed on your boat before putting it on the market may reveal a number of other 'fixes' that you didn't know about. Or, a marine survey may give your vessel a sparkling review that can be a selling feature.

A marine survey will also provide you with a valuation of your boat. Be cautious with this valuation however, and be sure to discuss it with your yacht broker. Most survey valuations are not 'market valuations' but are for insurance purposes. A boat is only 'worth' what someone is willing to pay for it.  As professional yacht brokers, our job is to help you set a price on your boat that is fair and sellable. We use a number of tools including 'sales' data, current market state and our years of experience in the industry.

We can also help you choose a marine surveyor. We strongly recommend that you obtain the services of a qualified marine surveyor recognized by either SAMS (Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors) or NAMS (National Association of Marine Services). Both these organizations work towards professional ethics and standards within our industry.

Taking the initial steps in getting things right before you sell your boat will go a long way towards making it a seamless and rewarding experience.

Smart Boaters Choose Professional Brokers

North South Nautical Group is a proud supporter of the Certified Professional Yacht Broker program.  In fact, not only did we encourage all of our brokers to become CPYB certified but we became the first yacht brokerage in Canada to attain the recognition of CPYB 'Endorsed Brokerage'. But what does it mean for the boat buyer or seller? Isn't one yacht brokerage as good as another?

Like other industries, recreational boating has created professional organizations to monitor it's activities. In a recent Sounding's Article, The Smart Buyer - Seek Out a Certified Broker First, Lon Bubeck Chairman of the CPYB Certification Advisory Council, Rod Rowan President of the Yacht Brokers Association of America and Colleen McDonough program manager of the National Yacht Broker Certification Program explain what it means to be a professional yacht broker.

In North America, it's the CPYB that monitors and regulates the activities of yacht brokers. CPYB certification is rigorous, requiring 3 years work experience prior to applying, an extensive three-hour exam and regular annual re-certification credits.

With all that work, boat buyers and sellers can be assured that CPYB brokers take pride in their profession. With a CPYB certification, a yacht broker has made a significant commitment to accountability to their broker peers through enforcement of a strict code of ethics and to a program of continuing education to improve their competency.

A professional yacht broker that takes pride in his profession, will also take pride in doing a good job for their client!

Hone Your Boat Handling With BoaterSkills.ca

With an estimated 2.5-million Ontario boaters taking to the water this season, the need for practical, hands-on training has never been greater. BoaterSkills.ca, a training program for recreational boaters in Ontario, has begun offering its boating safety and basic skills development clinics across the province. There’s no classroom, no exam, no major time commitment – just you, your boat, your crew and a day with a professional captain.

Conveniently located in the offices of the Yacht Brokerage firm North South Nautical Group Inc. at Port Harbour Marina, BoaterSkills.ca sends a professional instructor to their client’s boat to provide half or full-day onboard training. From tying knots, to docking, anchoring and rules of the road, BoaterSkills.ca tailors the clinics to the client’s individual needs.

Mike Burns, President and owner of North South Nautical Group, works with BoaterSkills.ca to offer hands-on training to his clients. He says more boaters need to appreciate the many benefits to hands-on training.

”From what I have observed in the past, proper training can only enhance the experience people have on the water with their boats, and Craig has certainly created a curriculum that can accomplish this,” said Burns.  “As people’s boating skills develop, so does their confidence.”

Craig Hamilton, founder and chief instructor of Boaterskills.ca, has sailed many parts of the world as a professional skipper and has witnessed time and again disastrous outcomes as a result of boaters who have not received even the most basic training before heading out on the water.

“BoaterSkills.ca provides you with the hands-on training you need to be safe on the water,” said Hamilton. “The Pleasure Craft Operator Card program makes you legal to operate a boat; we want you competent to operate a boat.”  More...
